AFRICA/BURKINA FASO - Waiting for yesterday’s election results

Monday, 30 November 2015 elections

Ouagadougou (Agenzia Fides) - Burkina Faso is waiting for the results of the first round of presidential and legislative elections which took place yesterday, 29 November. The elections are the first since the former President, Blaise Compaore was forced to resign at the end of October last year (see Fides 31/10/2014). After a transition period and a coup attempt orchestrated in late September (see Fides 02/10/2015) by the Presidential Guard who remained loyal to former President, the Country intends to turn the page.
To ensure safety 25,000 soldiers and policemen were mobilized while in order to ensure the proper conduct of the poll over 17,000 local and foreign election observers were called. Among them there are also those of the Episcopal "Justice and Peace" Commission which trained 500 observers and 150 supervisors, distributed in 15 dioceses in the Country.
The approximately 18 million voters were called to choose among 14 candidates of whom only two are given as favorites: Marc Kabore, Prime Minister and President of the National Assembly at the time of Compaoré, and Zephirin Diabre, former Minister of Finance in the 90s.
