AFRICA/CENTRAL AFRICA - 90% of voters approved the new constitution in Bangui

Friday, 18 December 2015 elections

Bangui (Agenzia Fides) - 90% of voters in Bangui voted "yes" to the constitutional referendum of December 13 (see Fides 17/12/2015), but the turnout was only 30% of voters in the capital of the Central African Republic, according to provisional results of the National Election's Authority (ANE). According to a statement sent to Agenzia Fides by the National Election's Observatory "the referendum is an electoral test before the presidential and legislative ballots, and is an important step for the restoration of constitutional order".
The Electoral Observatory encountered several problems during the conduct of the referendum, and this is why it proposes a number of recommendations in view of the presidential elections on 27 December: strengthening of security measures of seats and candidates; improving access to polling stations for the disabled; inform voters on voting procedures. Finally it asks everyone to raise awareness of citizens to participate in the vote. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 18/12/2015)
