Mocoa (Agenzia Fides) - The newly-elected Bishop of the diocese of Mocoa-Sibundoy (Colombia), His Exc. Mgr. Luis Alberto Maldonado said that the Catholic Church will have an important role in the post-conflict, especially in the area of Putumayo. The statement came at the end of the liturgical celebration in the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel in Mocoa, on December 15.
During the ceremony the Bishop stressed that his mission is the same one that Jesus gave to his disciples: to go and preach the gospel, now and forever, and to promote the dignity of human beings.
With regards to the post conflict situation Colombia is currently experiencing, Mgr. Maldonado stressed the importance of the role of the Catholic Church, because the Church has always been prepared and open to dialogue when it comes to truth and the dignity of people.
He also noted that the land in the area of Putumayo is one of the cornerstones for the theme of forgiveness and reconciliation, because it was the scene of many clashes between FARC and the Colombian army. The new Bishop is sure that FARC will understand that the Church does not generate conflicts, but rather speaks to the people of God. In this sense, he is convinced that the guerrillas will allow priests to return to the areas where, for several years, it was forbidden to preach the Gospel. "I have high expectations from those who are committed to evangelizing" said the Bishop. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 18/12/2015)
