Riohacha (Agenzia Fides) - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) ordered precautionary measures to protect children and adolescents of the indigenous Wayúu community of the municipalities of Uribia, Manaure, Riohacha and Maicao in the department of La Guajira. The decision was taken following the serious risk of malnutrition and lack of access to drinking water that in eight years have already caused the death of 4770 Wayúu children. In a statement sent to Fides, the IACHR states that the members of this community are in conditions of real uncertainty and, therefore, urged the Colombian government to take emergency measures to protect the life and integrity of indigenous children and adolescents. It also urged the government to intervene on the people already affected, ensuring availability, accesibility and quality of health services, in order to address child malnutrition and take immediate action to ensure that communities may have, as soon as possible, access to drinking water and sufficient quantity and quality food.
