AFRICA/BURUNDI - Shootings in Bujumbura, also in the central areas

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) – There are ongoing shootings in Bujumbura, say local sources to Agenzia Fides from the capital of Burundi. "We heard gunfire and explosions up to 40 minutes ago. People fought and are fighting in several areas of the city, not only in the suburbs but also in the central areas", say our sources, who for security reasons have asked to remain anonymous.
"Only last week the security forces had carried out operations to seize weapons in the hands of militias contrary to the President, but fighting resumed stronger than before and the number of rebels appears to be increasing. Today’s conflicts probably broke out when the army launched a new operation for the seizure of weapons".
"Finally, we know that in Burundi there are also men of the FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda), the guerrilla group that opposes the government of Kigali, who took refuge in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to give a hand to the local militia loyal to President Pierre Nkurunziza. Now this group acts as a reservoir of mercenaries paid by our government", say our sources. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 16/11/2015)
