AFRICA/ANGOLA - Bishops put reconciliation at the centre of celebrations to mark 40 years of independence

Luanda (Agenzia Fides) – Angola’s 40 years of national independence from Portugal will be the central theme of the 2nd Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Angola and Sao Tomé (CEAST) to take place 4 - 10 November. According to a statement received by Fides , the position of CEAST regarding these 40 years of independence will be expressed in a message to be issued at the end of the Assembly. The Bishops have also organised a Conference on the 40th anniversary of the proclamation of independence.
In view of this important date, several Bishops have called for reconciliation, which is besides. the theme of the Angola’s National Eucharistic Congress opened in March this year and to conclude on 21 August 2016.
Prior to 4 November, the opening date of the CEAST Plenary, radio Católica de Angola, will organise a public round table discussion on these last 40 years of the country’s history. For its part the Catholic University is planning an international Conference on the mission of the Church during the national independence years. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 26/10/2015)
