Luanda (Agenzia Fides) - Thousands of children habitually live on the streets of Luanda, capital of Angola, where there are 8 million inhabitants. Most have families but have been abandoned for economic reasons or thrown out on suspicion of witchcraft. On the occasion of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of independence of the Country (see Fides 11/11/2015), many of these young children were removed from the streets and with the help of buses, were clumped in orphanages, in an attempt to hide the misery of the capital. The news was widely reported by media around the world. In a note sent to Fides we read the testimony of a missionary, the director of the Arnaldo Janssen reception center (Cacaj). In his orphanage there are currently 110 children between 7 and 18 years of age. Thirty of them arrived in October, when the ''cleaning operation" promoted by the Angolan authorities began.
