AFRICA/ETHIOPIA - Project for women and vulnerable children in the Somali region

Friday, 30 October 2015 development

Addis Ababa (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Church in the Somali region of Ethiopia is engaged in a project in favor of women and vulnerable children. The idea, says a local source to Agenzia Fides, was born following the meeting of some missionary volunteers with the locals who are completely abandoned to themselves, deprived of every basic necessity. Most of these vulnerable people live with HIV. With the cooperation of hospitals and the local Catholic Church, women infected with the virus were immediately taken to local health centers for treatment. Many of them work in brothels, called cafés, as waitresses and maids. Many are under 25 years of age, and young children are without any means of support beyond what they earn in so-called "coffee shops". They come from different geographical and cultural areas of Ethiopia. The project is coordinated by three volunteers, a nun and two young missionaries who have the goal to to fight poverty through education, removing women and children from the streets and brothels. The group has organized educational programs, lessons in hygiene and child care for mothers, as well as cooperating with the local hospital for health problems. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 30/10/2015)
