Managua (Agenzia Fides) - Opponents of the Interoceanic Canal project of Nicaragua, to connect the Atlantic and Pacific ocean (see Fides 15/06/2015) suspended the planned march yesterday, 27 October, which was to end in front of the National Assembly, in order to avoid clashes with police in riot gear and government supporters, who blocked the passage of the demonstrators. This is what we learn in the note sent to Fides by a local source.
Previously, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Managua, His Exc. Mgr. Silvio Báez Ortega, had informed Fides on the convening of the peaceful march and its directions given to "avoid provocations to act of violence". "To demonstrate peacefully against the Interoceanic Canal project, or for any other reason, is legitimate - stated Mgr. Baez - it is a human and constitutional right for all citizens of Nicaragua. And the government has no reason to prevent the march, or sabotage it, much less to act violently against the demonstrators".
As soon as the march began protesters found the roads closed by the police, and therefore the decision was to suspend it. Protesters against the construction of the canal came from many regions of the country, and had difficulty in reaching the meeting point and start the march: the government in fact had blocked roads and suspended the service of inter-urban mobility to avoid the arrival of many protesters in the capital.
