ASIA/UZBEKISTAN - The Pope creates Apostolic Administration of Uzbekistan and appoints first Apostolic Administrator

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father Pope John Paul II on 1 April 2005 raised the Mission sui iuris of Uzbekistan to the rank of the Apostolic Administration and appointed first Apostolic Administrator Rev. Father Jerzy Maculewicz OFM Conv., Assistant General of the Order of Friars Minor for Eastern Europe, elevating him at the same time to the titualar Church of Nara.
Fr Jerzy Maculewicz was born on 30 May 1955 at Daszew (Soviet Union today Ukraine) and went to the local technical institute. He worked as an electrician in a factory in Ketowice from 1975 to 1979. In 1989 he joined the Krakow province of the Order of Friars Minor and made his perpetual vows on 2 October 1994 the year he completed his studies in theology at St Bonaventura Pontifical Theology faculty where he obtained a Licentiate in Theology in 1997. He was ordained a priest on 22 June 1996. After pastoral work in various places in 2000 he was appointed Vicar and provincial secretary of the Krakow province of the Order of Friars Minor. Since 2001 he has been Assistant General of the Order of Friars Minor for Eastern Europe. (SL) (Fides Service 1/4/2005 lines 17 words 214)
