Monday, 11 July 2005

Xi An (Fides Service) - During a recent official visit to China with her husband, Queen Paola of Belgium took time to pay a visit to a local Catholic community. The devout Catholic Queen was taken to visit the most active Catholic community in mainland China in Xi An diocese, in the north western province of Shann Xi. The Sovereign was warmly welcomed by Bishop Antonio Li Du An, the clergy, religious and faithful. Then the Bishop gave the Queen a guided tour of St Peter’s church built 300 years ago by Jesuit missionaries.
The Queen then went to visit children with mental disabilities at a local Catholic Charity Home. The home was opened in September 2001. It is run by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Sisters who care for 19 children aged 6 to 12. After giving the Queen a warm welcome the children won the heart of the royal visitor with a performance of song and dance. The Queen greeted each of the children, teachers and helpers and praised the excellent work of the Sisters. Everyone clapped as the Queen left carrying with her the affection of the Catholic community in Xi An.
