ASIA/TURKEY - Turkey’s Christians and Muslims are against homosexual ‘families’, local Church voices support for pro-family demonstration in Spain

Saturday, 18 June 2005

Istanbul (Fides Service) - “The battle to defend natural law, real marriage and the unborn child unites Christian and Muslims in Turkey and the pro-family demonstration in Spain has the full support of Turkish public opinion as well as the local Christian community” Fr. George Marovich, spokesman of the Turkish Bishops’ Conference.
“Here in Turkey, at least so far, the fundamental principles of life and the family are not questioned. In Muslim tradition, like Christian tradition, the institution of the family is upheld and unions of homosexuals are not recognised. It is most discouraging to see the Union European taking this path. This is not ‘decision of a civilisation’ as they claim, it goes against the very essence of the human person and human civilisation. Of this Turkish society is convinced. What is happening in Europe is seen here as an aberration. On behalf of the Catholic Church in Turkey I assure full support to Spain’s people, Catholics and Catholic Church in this endeavour to stop the law. The universal Church will always be united to defend Christian values, Fr George told Fides
