OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Blessing of foundation stone for new Catholic University in Sydney ready by end of 2006

Monday, 13 June 2005

Sydney (Fides Service) - It was Cardinal George Pell who on 9 June blessed the foundation stone for a new Catholic University which will be built in Sydney. University of Notre-Dame St Benedict Campus will contribute considerably to the quality and pluralism of education available in Sydney, the local Church said.
The University will offer courses in Letters, Education Science, Economics, Law, Science of Nursing and should be ready before the end of 2006. The University of Notre Dame opened in eastern Australia in 1989 has a campus in Freemantle and another in Broome with over 5,000 students.
The new campus in Sydney will be jointly funded by the government and the archdiocese. The building of a new Catholic university confirms the quality instruction offered by the Catholic community in Australia which draws families, regardless of religion. This new campus is an act of recognition for the Church in the field of education. The number of non Catholic pupils and students in Catholic institutes continues to rise. Families appreciate the seriousness, quality of teaching corps, structures and above all the baggage of moral values, which Catholic schools and colleges strive to instil through scholastic activities.
