EUROPE/SPAIN - Adoption of a child by same sex couples cannot be justified if we consider the rights of the child

Wednesday, 18 May 2005

Madrid (Fides Service) - “To subordinate the interests of a child to the desires of adults is an ignoble experiment of social engineering which damages something which should be sacred for every legislator: the primary right of minor to have a mother and a father in keeping with the anthropological model of the human species”. This statement was made by Benigno Blanco vice president of the Spanish Family Forum (FEF), and association of 5,000 associations, 20 confederations and 117 federations representing more than 4 million families.
FEF says that for adoption only one interest must be taken into consideration, the right of every orphan to have the mother and father to replace the mother and father they have lost. Therefore adoption of a child by same sex couples cannot be justified in view of the correct development and formation of personality of the child. This law aims simply to favour homosexual couples giving them the right to make a child part of their union with total disregard for the rights of the minor in question.
Moreover, according to FEF, this proposed amendment to the Civil Code will have repercussions on those in the process of international adoption and make people concerned for treatment of children in Spain. (R.G.) (Agenzia Fides 18/5/2005, righe 15, parole 208)
