AMERICA/PERU - The people of Peru thank Pope John Paul II who restored hope to the country at critical times: young people organise special Sunday Mass for the Pope

Friday, 8 April 2005

Lima (Fides Service) - The people of Peru, who recall with gratitude the Pope’s two visits to their country in 1985 and 1988, at critical times for the country when he restored hope in a country in the grip of violence and poverty, now gather to pray for the repose of the soul of John Paul II. A special Mass was attended by all the Bishops of Peru, members of the government and the president Alejandro Toledo. On Sunday 10 April, there will be a Mass in Lima cathedral organised by young Peruvians to express their gratitude to the Pope. In the invitation to come to the Mass the young people say: “One of the things the Pope taught young people is gratitude. This is the time to thank God for the gift of the Pope’s paternal presence, his closeness and his friendship”. (R.Z.) (Agenzia Fides 8/4/2005)
