AFRICA/ DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - The Pope appoints new Bishop of Kilwa-Kasenga

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father Pope John Paul II on 18 March 2005 appointed Bishop of Kilwa-Kasenga (Democratic Republic of Congo) Rev. Fulgence Muteba Mugalu of the clergy of Kongolo and secretary General of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Democratic Congo.
Rev. Fulgence Muteba Mugalu was born on 9 July1962 in the diocese of Kongolo. He studied in Congo and in Canada and has a degree in pastoral theology from the University of Montreal. He was ordained a priest on 5 August 1990. He has since been: teacher of theology at the Catholic Faculty of Kinshasa; secretary General of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Democratic Congo (CENCO); co-ordinator of the diocesan commission for justice and peace Lubumbashi diocese, member of the Congolese Bishops’ Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith .
The diocese of Kilwa-Kasenga created in 1962, is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Lubumbashi. It is situated in the region of Katanga. It has an area of 54.000 sq. km., and a population of 441,712. There are 130,200 Catholics gathered in 74 parishes, assisted by 26 priests, 8 brothers, 30 women religious, 20 major seminarians. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 18/3/2005; Righe 15; Parole 169)
