VATICAN - The Pope’s Angelus message: “It is by contemplating Christ and following him with patient trust that we come to understand that every form of human suffering holds within it God’s promise of salvation and happiness”.

Vatican City (Fides Service) - On Sunday 27 February, 3rd Sunday in Lent, the Pope’s customary message at the midday Angelus prayer was read out in St Peter’s Square by Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, substitute of the Secretary of State who also gave the apostolic blessing to those present and those connected via radio or television on the Pope’s behalf. The Pope, still at the Gemelli Hospital, was united in spirit with the recitation of the prayer. Afterwards he made a surprise appearance at the window to bless the crowds gathered in front of the hospital. Here is our English translation of the Pope’s message:
“My dearest Brothers and Sisters, once again I am speaking to you from the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli. I thank you with affection and I feel you all spiritually close to me. I think of those gathered in St Peter’s square, individuals and groups and the many people all over the world who are showing concern for my person. I ask you to continue to accompany me, above all with your prayers.
The penitential climate of Lent which we are living helps us to better understand the value of suffering which touches every one of us in one way or the other. It is by contemplating Christ and following him with patient trust that we come to understand that every form of human suffering holds within it God’s promise of salvation and happiness. I would like this message of comfort and hope to reach everyone, particularly those who are experiencing times of difficulty, those who suffer in body and spirit.
