AFRICA/DEMOCRATIC CONGO - Over 45,000 people welcome new auxiliary Bishop of Bukavu in eastern Democratic Congo

Bukavu (Fides Service ) - Catholics in Bukavu gave a warm welcome to the new Auxiliary Bishop François Xavier Maroy Rusengo on Sunday 16 January, during an outdoor mass celebrated at the Kadatu Concordia sports stadium to accommodate the large number of people anxious to take part. Ten bishops were present for the event including the papal nuncio to Democratic Congo Archbishop Giovanni, Cardinal Frederic Etsou Archbishop of Kinshasa and the Archbishop of Bukavu, Mgr. Charles Gambale Mbogha), over 200 priests and at least 45,000 people. Shouts of joy punctuated reading of the Papal letter announcing the appointment of Bishop Maroy in Latin, French, Swahili and Mashi.
Present Joseph Kabila sent a delegation of 70 people and a gift for the new bishop a brand new jeep “so he may continue to preach peace in the Bushi highlands”. Radio Maria Malkia wa Amani di Bukavu interviewed several distinguished guests who voiced appreciation for the new auxiliary Bishop’s work in the social field and his commitment to promote peace.
The arrival of the new auxiliary Bishop was prepared with a novena of prayer in the 33 dioceses and also talks with regard to the work of an auxiliary Bishop. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 17/1/2005 righe 26 parole 276)
