AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Week of Peace: Colombians want a date for talks with the ELN

Friday, 11 September 2015

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - The 28th edition of the Week of Peace is being held in different cities of Colombia with exhibitions, conferences and artistic events, which this year has chosen the motto "I greet others", as greeting another person "is in itself a sign of peace" organizers say.
Mgr. Hector Fabio Henao Gaviria, head of the National Secretariat of Social Ministry, said that "Colombia needs attitudes, gestures and expressions that make the encounter between those who have identified themselves so far as enemies possible. Greeting others allows to discover the human being that is in every person beyond the prejudices and perceptions we have".
The celebration, which began on Sunday 6th and ends on September 13, is an opportunity to highlight the difficult situation regarding peace talks with guerrilla groups. According to the note sent to Fides, Colombians demand to accelerate the discussions and indicate a date for the start of formal negotiations between the government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) (see Fides 25/03/2015).
