AMERICA/HONDURAS - Children resist famine thanks to school snacks

Wednesday, 9 September 2015

Intibucá (Agenzia Fides) - The severe drought caused by El Niño has caused the loss of entire crops, the only source of food for many Honduran families. In some places of the Country, the school snack is the only meal that allows children to resist famine. In many communities, children go to school mainly to have something to eat. One of the municipalities where the situation is extremely precarious is Yamaranguila, Intibucá, which registers a very critical high level of food insecurity. Many fields are dry and people are left without anything to eat. In the school hall the children make long queues with their plates and plastic cups to get a snack. Some will only eat a part, and bring the rest home to share with the family.
Altogether, in Honduras, the drought affects the lives of 161,403 families of 146 municipalities. The government is putting into practice an action plan to bring food and aid. Families are given five kilos of rice, five kilos of sugar, five pounds of beans, two kilograms of maize flour, a pound of coffee, two pounds of butter, two pounds of spaghetti and one pound of pasta.
