AMERICA/VENEZUELA - Poverty and precariousness force people to seek food in the garbage

Monday, 7 September 2015

Barquisimeto (Agenzia Fides) - The economic crisis that is currently affecting Venezuela decreases the number of Venezuelans who can buy basic food items on a daily basis. According to information gathered by Fides, this painful reality is particularly evident in the city of Barquisimeto, capital of the Venezuelan State of Lara, where hungry people rummage in the garbage with the hope of finding something to eat.
The high cost of living and insecurity in the country have contributed to worsening this social phenomenon.
This situation is certainly a sign of the difficulties that affect the middle class, forced to get food out of fast food restaurants, an unprecedented event in Venezuelan society. According to some local psychologists, since 2012 - 2013 a significant increase of people have been living in poverty, exacerbated by insecurity and inflation, which has led to an economic recession. This serious problem is a further demonstration of the seriousness of the crisis that Venezuela is experiencing. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 07/09/2015)
