AMERICA/COLOMBIA - The Bishop of Cucuta marches in defense of the rights of Colombians

Monday, 7 September 2015

Cucuta (Agenzia Fides) - Colombians who live on the border with Venezuela marched in defense of the dignity of their compatriots expelled and to reaffirm their brotherhood with this country, two weeks after the closure of the passage between Santander (Colombia) and Tachira (Venezuela).
According to information sent to Fides, yesterday, Sunday, September 6, more than 500 people marched starting from the historical Temple of Villa del Rosario to the Simon Bolivar international bridge that unites Colombia and Venezuela, a strategic point in the 2219 km border between the two nations. The starting point of the march was very symbolic, because here the Congress of Cucuta was set up in 1821, where Liberator Simon Bolivar and General Francisco de Paula Santander gave life to the Constitution of the newly established Colombia.
The march was also attended by His Exc. Mgr. Víctor Manuel Ochoa Cadavid, Bishop of Cúcuta and the mayor of the city, Donamaris Ramirez. The Bishop reiterated the appeal made by the representatives of the Church of both countries to seek solutions through urgent dialogue (see Fides 05/09/2015). "Dialogue is necessary, our Presidents must speak. We cannot create wounds in this situation and we have to build bilateral relations that are crucial for the future", said Mgr. Ochoa.
