AMERICA/ARGENTINA - “They steal not only the people’s money but also their hope” Bishop Lozano denounces

Tuesday, 18 August 2015

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) –“They are stealing not only the money of the people but also their hope ", said Bishop Jorge Lozano of Gualeguaychú also President of the Social Pastoral Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Argentina. The Bishop was speaking at a public conference held at the University of San Isidro.
Once again (see Fides 11/12/2014) Bishop Lozano denounced "structures of sin" which allow the existence of institutional corruption, trafficking of human persons and trafficking of drugs. Then, referring to disastrous floods in the province of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe the Bishop remarked, “the poorest people are the first to suffer due to delay in public works”:
Bishop Lozano continued: "When we speak of corruption in the structural sense we refer to social structures organised to facilitate corruption. This explains why we speak of "structures of sin". And when we discuss how to act in society we intend to promote change in social structures to eliminate such situations of poverty. If the roof is faulty and there is a heavy fall of rain, clearly water will drip from the ceiling and so we get a bucket. But at some point we have to repair the roof. This is why it is better to make a change in the structures to render them structures of justice and solidarity", the Bishop concluded.
