ASIA/BANGLADESH - Child labor: illegal but cheap in a Country with 8 million working children

Thursday, 6 August 2015

Dhaka (Agenzia Fides) - With 200,000 inhabitants, Korail is one of the largest slums of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. Among its labyrinthine streets, mud and garbage, there are thousands of homes of just 10 square meters which house entire families. Extreme poverty is the general situation of these people that force hundreds of thousands of children to work. They are the poorest in a Country where 40% of the population lives on less than $ 1.25 a day. Considering the seriousness of the phenomenon, the Spanish NGO Educo in Korail launched a program of education in 2000, adapted to working children. The Program’s objective is to improve the attitudes of children to get better jobs and break the cycle of poverty for the future. Throughout Bangladesh there are eight million child laborers.
