Cartago (Agenzia Fides). “It is our duty to sensitise our people regarding certain important issues; we cannot be indifferent to situations which are painful and shameful for a country like ours ", said Bishop Gabriel Enrique Montero Umaña of San Isidro de El General, referring to social issues such as fertilisation in vitro, abortion and same sex marriage. The Bishop issued his warning during festivities for the annual ‘La Negrita’ Our Lady of the Angels celebration.
Bishop Montero asked for prayers for the family which faces many dangers: neglect, parents give too little attention to the family and the government fails to provide adequate protection families.
The feast day of Our Lady of the Angels originated in Getafe, near Madrid, and arrived in Costa Rica with the Spanish conquistadores.

Our Lady of the Angels was proclaimed Patron Saint of Costa Rica and Protectress of all America by Saint Pope John Paul II.
The celebrations are organised in Cartago (Costa Rica). Since the end of the 19th century an annual pilgrimage on August 2 has made its way here to the shrine to conclude in the XIX Basilica of the Angels.
Our Lady of the Angels, popularly known as La Negrita, is deeply loved by the people of Costa Rica.
