EUROPE/SPAIN - Solidarity Prize: Spanish Bishops in favour of Las Patronas candidature

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic Bishops of Spain have decided to support the candidature of Las Patronas group of Veracruz (Mexico), for the 2015 Princess of the Asturias solidarity Award. The women in question, a group of 15 who for 20 years have walked along railway lines to offer food and water thrown to clandestine central American migrants passengers on a train nicknamed the ‘beast’ following the American dream (see Fides 16/02/2015).

"The migrants, as many as 500 on one train, know they are running a risk because the train is in the hands of drug traffickers, but they are determined to escape from a life of extreme poverty ", said a statement issued by the chairman of the Commission for Migrants of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Spain.

Bishop José Raúl Vera López of Saltillo (Mexico), was one of the first to request international recognition for these women who work without pay to assist the migrants. Last week the Spanish Bishops requested support for the Las Patronas candidature for the famous Spanish Award known as the Premio Princesa de Asturias .
