AMERICA/MEXICO - "Corruption spreads when transparency remains only good intentions": the Catholic voice before the scandals

Monday, 13 July 2015

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The LXII Legislature of the Congress of Mexico approved the General Law of transparency during the last period of ordinary sessions, before the end of the legislature, promising strict austerity policies, given the economic crisis that affects millions of Mexicans. However legislators that are coming to an end of their mandate will enjoy substantial economic benefits, so "the end of the legislature will be an insult to Mexicans, without minimal resources to cope with the expenses of a family day," says the editorial of "Desde la Fe", weekly of the diocese of the Mexican capital, Mexico.
According to data reported by the same editorial, sent to Agenzia Fides, the 500 outgoing deputies will be guaranteed, besides severance pay and funds for livelihood, 556 million Mexican pesos (about 35 million US dollars).
"The country is not in a position to give 'premiums and claims' to local and federal deputies - writes the editorial -. Political commitment has become a business, to the benefit of he who takes advantage of public office. And corruption spreads when transparency remains only good intentions. This is an insult to Mexicans, who struggle every day to have minimum conditions of well-being ... there is no money to eat three times a day in the pockets of the people".
