AFRICA/KENYA - More than 500 deaths in 150 terrorist attacks in the last three years

Wednesday, 8 July 2015

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - More than 500 people were killed in 150 terrorist attacks in Kenya between 2012 and June 2015.
This is what the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation reports, according to which most of the victims were killed in Nairobi, Garissa and Mandera. Near the latter town the recent assault carried out by a group of Somali Shabaab was committed causing the death of 14 people (see Fides 07/07/2015).
Nairobi recorded 113 deaths and Mandera 68, while in the county of Lamu 68 people were killed in terrorist attacks. The deadliest attacks which occurred in Kenya is the massacre in April in the university campus of Garissa, where 148 students were killed (see Fides 08/04/2015) and the assault of September 21, 2013 at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, where 67 people were killed (see Fides 25/09/2013).
Most of the attacks have been attributed to the Somali Shabaab, but in some areas violence is also linked to clashes among tribes for the control of pastures and fertile lands or looting of cattle. The easy availability of weapons of war makes these attacks even more bloody. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 08/07/2015)
