ASIA/PAKISTAN - The police save a Christian accused of blasphemy from being lynched

Thursday, 2 July 2015

Lahore (Agenzia Fides) - New case of blasphemy charges against a Christian in Pakistan. As Fides learns, in the town of Farooqabad, in Punjab, the young Awais Qamar, son of Saraj Masih, was denounced when neighbors saw him use a piece of cloth as a mat on the floor of his house. Presumably verses from the Koran were written on the piece of cloth. The neighbors informed the imam of the nearby mosque who instigated the crowd. Muslims violently took Awais, his wife Rukhsanae, his sister-in-law Farhana, shaved their hair and painted their faces black, bringing them in procession through the village. They then started to beat them, and only the intervention of the police in Sheikhupura prevented the lynching. The police also arrested the local imam who attempted to incite the crowd against the police. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 02/07/2015)
