AFRICA/DR CONGO - "We respect the Constitution, no to Kabila’s third term", says civil society in South Kivu

Thursday, 25 June 2015

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "Respect the Constitution". This is the main request made by civil society in South Kivu (eastern Democratic Republic of Congo) during national talks promoted at a national and local level by President Joseph Kabila (see Fides 02/06/2015).
A note sent to Agenzia Fides states that, from 16 to 18 June, 116 representatives of civil society met in Bukavu, capital of South Kivu, to draw up a common position to present in the talks with the Governor of the Province.
Delegates reaffirmed their intention to continue the campaign "Do not touch my Constitution" launched in March 2013 and will end in December 2016, at the end of the long round of voting which started this year, with the election of Kabila’s successor.
Civil society thus reiterates its opposition to a possible constitutional amendment that would allow Kabila to show up for a third term. An eventuality that has already provoked strong protests in the Country. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 25/06/2015)
