AMERICA/ECUADOR - Bishops: dialogue is the only path to find solutions, violence is always destructive

Wednesday, 17 June 2015

Quito (Agenzia Fides) - With the title "The Bishops of Ecuador in the face of the situation in the country", the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference issued a statement, sent to Fides, which states: "the Church is present in the concerns, the joys and hopes of the people of Ecuador, in the face of the situation in the country, and welcomes the openness to dialogue, the only way possible to find fair and reasonable solutions because violence is always destructive".
For two days, on 10 and 11 June, Ecuador saw opposition supporters take to the streets and right-wing political groups, who demonstrated against President Correa and against the provisions of the Government that are considering an increase in some taxes. The protest also provoked clashes with police.
The Bishops added in their statement: "we welcome the opening of the national Government to dialogue, and urge both the government and the public in general, to maintain such dialogue on a permanent basis ... It is important to seek solutions that derive from the encounter with the other, who thinks differently, and must be heard and respected". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 17/06/2015)
