ASIA/SYRIA - The central districts of Aleppo attacked by rebels

Tuesday, 16 June 2015

Aleppo (Agenzia Fides) - On Monday, June 15, the central districts of Aleppo, currently under the control of the army, were attacked on several fronts by rebel militias with mortars, rockets and heavy machine guns, creating an offensive that is defined as "an unprecedented operation of war". Sources of the local Armenian Catholic community, contacted by Agenzia Fides, reported that the operation appeared designed with the clear intention of conquering the part of the metropolis defended by the regular forces, and confirm the provisional toll of 22 dead and over 150 injured.
They finally refer that the army was able to repel the attack and the situation today does not record developments.
In Aleppo, already in late May, the Christian communities had planned a series of pastoral initiatives, aimed primarily to boys and girls, such as the "summer camp" set up at the Latin parish to give them a bit of relief allowing them to leave the houses where they constantly live imprisoned, and where often there is no light and water.
Now the new attacks increase the number of Christian families who try in every way to leave the city, taking advantage of moments of respite, to find shelter in the coastal region of Latakia, guarded by the army of Assad. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 16/06/2015)
