AMERICA/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - The Pope urges us not to be indifferent towards immigrants

Friday, 29 May 2015

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - "Immigrants need pastoral and charitable care, in particular those of neighboring Haiti, in search of better living conditions in the Dominican Republic. Such attention leaves no room for the indifference of church clergy. The church needs to work with government authorities in order to find solutions of solidarity for those who lack the proper documents or are denied their basic. It is inexcusable to not promote initiatives of fraternity and peace between both nations, which exist on the same Caribbean": Pope Francis told bishops from the Dominican Republic. The Bishops were making their "ad limina" visits to the Vatican yesterday, 28 May.
The meeting took place as we approach the deadline, set for June 17, 2015, in which the opportunity is given to thousands of Haitian immigrants to regularize their status in the Dominican Republic. Many Haitians born in the Dominican Republic are at risk of expulsion.
According to information gathered by Fides, the new Chancellor of Haiti, Lener Renauld, yesterday met Andres Navarro in Santo Domingo, with whom he discussed the progress of the national plan of regularization of undocumented foreigners (PNRE), that the authorities of the Dominican Republic started in 2013 and which affects thousands of Haitian immigrants living in this country (see Fides 16/03/2015, 28/01/2015, 16/10/2014, 16/06/2014, 07/02/2014, 25/10/2013).
