AMERICA/MEXICO - Tornado among the strongest recorded in the country affects Ciudad Acuña: 14 deaths and massive damage

Coahuila (Agenzia Fides) - The tornado that hit Ciudad Acuña on May 25 has killed 13 people, 150 have been injured, 750 houses damaged and 4,000 without electricity. The phenomenon occurred around 6 am in the western part of the city.
It is the first phenomenon of its kind in the municipality of Acuña, located in the Mexican state of Coahuila, and one of the strongest recorded in the country. The governor of Coahuila, Ruben Moreira, said that there was no tornado warning, so no one expected such a phenomenon.
The Mexican Bishops' Conference has sent Fides a statement in which it informs that Pope Francis expressed in a message addressed to His Exc. Msgr. Alonso G. Garza Trevino, Bishop of Piedras Negras, "his closeness to the victims of the tornado that hit Ciudad Acuña, offering his prayers to God for the eternal rest of the deceased and their families. He also encourages civil and ecclesial institutions and people of good will to provide help to those who have lost their homes.
