AFRICA/NIGER - Civil society denounces: serious human rights violations in the east of the Country

Thursday, 21 May 2015

Niamey (Agenzia Fides) - Security forces in Niger are committing human rights violations in the region of Diffa, in the east of the Country, where in February a state of emergency was declared because of the raids carried out by Boko Haram, from neighboring Nigeria. This was denounced, in a note sent to Agenzia Fides, by the Nigerian Collective of Associations of Civil Society, according to which "hundreds of thousands of our compatriots were forcibly expelled from the islands and from the lake villages, leaving behind not only their history but also their possessions at the mercy of Boko Haram". In addition to expulsions, other coercive measures are added, such as the prohibition of the sale of fish and chili in the region. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 21/05/2015)
