AFRICA/DR CONGO - Prayers and mobilization of the population to demand an end of attacks by Ugandan rebels

Monday, 18 May 2015

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Religious confessions of North Kivu have organized moments of prayer to pray for peace in the province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a prey to repeated violence by various armed groups. The initiative is part of a series of actions organized by the Coordination of Civil Society of North Kivu, to mobilize the population of North Kivu to express solidarity with the people of Beni, Rutchuru, Masisi and Goma, "victims - as stated in a statement sent to Agenzia Fides - of repeated massacres, kidnappings and other atrocities committed ADF-Nalu and other outlaws".
The ADF-Nalu is a guerrilla group born from the union of two previous movements that are fighting against the government of Uganda, the Allied Democratic Forces and the National Army for the Liberation of Uganda, but for two decades has been in Nord-Kivu, where it continuously commits crimes against the Congolese population.
Among other initiatives promoted by the civil society, on May 22 every religious denomination in this region will organize a prayer meeting to remember those killed.
Since October 2014 more than 350 people have been killed in the province in attacks attributed to the ADF-Nalu. The last, which caused 23 deaths, occurred on May 13, during the visit of the Minister of the Interior who came especially to try to calm the minds of the exasperated population. (L.M.)
