Monday, 18 May 2015

Rancagua (Agenzia Fides) - A hunger strike carried out by 117 former political prisoners lasted a little over a month, divided in groups in different locations around the country, who among other things, call for the increase of pensions, which are lower than the minimum wage.
After 36 hours of negotiations, the leaders of the group failed, on Saturday, May 16, to reach an agreement with the government. The group's spokesman, regional representative and national president of the Association of Political Prisoners, David Quintana, reported according to a note sent to Fides, that a commission, chaired by the Bishop of Rancagua, His Exc. Mgr. Alejandro Goic Karmelic will be formed.
This new Commission will also include representatives of the Ministries of Interior and Finance, together with the Director of the Human Rights Institute, Lorena Frias. The main points of the agreement reached provide for the creation of this commission, which will start operating at the end of the month.
Today, Monday, May 18, the agreement is expected to be signed. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 18/05/2015)
