VATICAN - Archbishop Romero will be the patron of Caritas Internationalis

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of San Salvador, Mgr. Oscar Arnulfo Romero (1917 -1980), who will be beatified on May 23 in San Salvador, murdered for standing with the poor in El Salvador, was adopted as a patron of Caritas Internationalis, informs the note sent to Agenzia Fides. The General Assembly of Caritas, which ended yesterday, May 17, was attended by representatives of 160 national Caritas organizations. In addition to electing a new President, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, the assembly reconfirmed Michel Roy as Secretary General and Alexander Bodmann of Austria was elected as new treasurer. The newly-elected President said "Caritas will work towards putting the human family and human dignity at the heart of development".
Caritas delegates also called attention to the plight of Christians who suffer from religious persecution in Syria and Iraq and of migrants and refugees all over the world. South Sudan became the 165th national member organisation of the Caritas confederation. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 18/05/2015)
