AMERICA/PARAGUAY - Archbishop Valenzuela Mellid: "We all have to be responsible in carrying out our duties"

Asuncion (Agenzia Fides) - On May 14, on the occasion of National Day in Paraguay, the Archbishop of Asunción, His Exc. Mgr. Edmundo Ponziano Valenzuela Mellid, S.D.B., chaired the Te Deum in the Cathedral, attended by the highest authority of the nation. The Te Deum is part of the celebrations planned for the 204 years of independence of the country. Among the authorities present: President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes; Vice President, Juan Afara; government ministers and members of the diplomatic corps.
According to the note sent to Agenzia Fides by local sources, during his homily, the Archbishop spoke of the situation of the country and strongly criticized the division that comes from the struggle between the parties. Mgr. Valenzuela Mellid stressed that the country should not be divided by disputes between parties.
Mgr. Valenzuela highighted that a national consultation should be promoted as soon as possible, in which the values and morals of the person must be put at the center of the necessary inter-institutional dialogue. "We all have to be responsible in carrying out our duties to combat anti-values, before the rampant corruption and its consequences", urged the Archbishop. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 15/05/2015)
