Beirut (Agenzia Fides) - Eight Lebanese parties, related to both blocs that for years have dominated the national political scene, have agreed to sign a document entitled "National Partnership to strengthen the state and fight terrorism" prepared and proposed at the initiative of the Political Commission of the Maronite League as a base to relaunch political dialogue and reactivate institutions paralyzed by conflicts and mutual vetoes. The document will also be signed by representatives of the Hezbollah Shiite party, those of the Lebanese Forces, the Future Party and the Free Patriotic Movement. The document was presented on Saturday evening, May 9 at a conference organized at the Metropolitan Hotel of Beirut, where the speakers also reported that the text will soon be submitted to Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai.
"We, representatives of the political parties mentioned" reads the text of the document, sent to Agenzia Fides, "state that we belong to a united, pluralist Lebanon, and we reiterate our commitment to the partnership as envisaged in the document of national agreement (...) and mutual respect among citizens, whatever their religious, cultural and political differences are". Sharing this common ground - said the document - "is the right way to protect Lebanon by the wave of violent extremism and fanaticism which distort religions and affects certain Countries and societies, including some Arab societies". In the meeting, the Minister of Culture Rony Araigi, representative of al-Marada Movement, referred to the difficulties and suffering endured by Christians in the Middle East, highlighting them as the first victims of the "creative chaos" pursued by regional and global powers.
