Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - Burundi, the protagonist of one of the best reintegration programs for refugees in recent years, sees again part of its population seeking refuge abroad because of the political crisis linked to the protests against outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza, who intends to stand for election on 26 June for a third term.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 50,000 Burundians have fled to Rwanda (25,000), Tanzania (18,689) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (more than 8,000). "Most come from the northern provinces of Ngozi and Muyinga" said a statement sent to Agenzia Fides. "This week, however, we have seen the arrival of people from urban areas, including several university and high schools students".
UNHCR says many refugees found it difficult to leave Burundi. UNHCR calls on the government of Burundi to ensure the freedom of movement of people, and thanked the authorities of neighboring Countries for the hospitality granted to refugees. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 11/05/2015)
