Torreón (Agenzia Fides) - His Exc. Mgr. Jose Guadalupe Galvan, Bishop of the Diocese of Torreon, met with representatives of the Castilla family to begin the legal process of transferring ownership of the hill where the monumental statue of "Christ de Cerro de las Noas" rises. The statue, which represents Christ with open arms, is located 220 meters above the city of Torreon, 1,300 meters above sea level, is about 22 meters high and weighs 580 tons.
According to the note sent to Fides, Fr. Jose Rodriguez Tenorio expressed his dream of having a sacred image that watched over the people and at the same time represented a hallmark to motivate the faithful, Catholics and non-Catholics, to visit that place. In 1973 the artist Vladimir Alvarado materialized the idea, realizing the statue of Christ which is the second largest in Latin America, after the one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Mgr. Galindo Galvan said that "the family has decided to make the donation". The city of Torreón and its surroundings, as well as being a place of tourist interest, has become famous because of the "Cristo de las Noas", a place of pilgrimage for Catholics throughout Mexico.
