AMERICA/UNITED STATES - Cardinal Maradiaga visits Central American migrants detained in Dilley

Tuesday, 5 May 2015

San Antonio (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, traveled to San Antonio, Texas, to meet the Archbishop of this city, His Exc. Mgr. Gustavo García Siller, in order to know the situation of hundreds of migrants, mostly Mexicans and Central Americans, stopped by the authorities. In the group there is also a large number of Hondurans who are in the largest detention center in the United States, in Dilley, near San Antonio.
During a press conference after the visit to the detention center last weekend with Archbishop Garcia Siller, Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga spoke about the situation that pushes fellow Hondurans and also people from Guatemala and El Salvador to try to emigrate to the United States. In the region in fact "there are situations of violence and poverty that have led to mass exodus of these people", explained the Cardinal, who is also President of Caritas Internationalis. He also told the press that his visit will also serve to report the situation to the Holy Father.
The note sent to Fides recalls that last year the border between the US and Mexico saw an alarming increase in the number of children and teenagers traveling alone, unaccompanied by an adult, so there was talk of "humanitarian crisis". Many of these minors are still in the center in Dilley and the Cardinal was able to talk to some of them, because they are under the custody and care of the Catholic Church of San Antonio.
