AMERICA/MEXICO - Cardinal Robles: "There is corruption, mistrust, culture of violence, but we must propose a Church that goes forth"

Monday, 27 April 2015

Guadalajara (Agenzia Fides) - President of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega, Archbishop of Guadalajara (Jalisco) in an interview with the local newspaper "El Pais", sent to Agenzia Fides, spoke about several current issues such as the case of the students killed in Ayotzinapa, scandals of corruption, lack of confidence.
In the last two years, Mexico has punished 101 officials for corruption. In this regard, the Cardinal said: "There can be no progress or development without trust, that has to be restored. How? With credibility. People need to see that what they say is then put into practice. Mexicans want to see good for all, not just for a few. Even the President stated his feelings of great mistrust".
When asked about the June elections, Cardinal Robles said: "We are asking people to vote, but with criterion: one must know the candidate, what he did for the common good. Abstention is not good for the country".
On the events related to the tragic events of Ayotzinapa and organized crime, the President of the Episcopal Conference said he considered that "there are many factors in these cases. There has been a loss of values, including that of life; the ethical aspect has been weakened, we have a climate of impunity in which the law is violated and organized crime imposes its interests. There is a culture of violence and crime".
In Mexico what is surprising is that the worship of "Santa Muerte" seems to increase its followers, even if Cardinal Robles said: "I do not think it is so popular, however, it is closely related to the conflicts generated by violence, to the places of drug trafficking. This is a deformation of the religious sense. Death ... it is invoked to do harm. And this is not according to the religion. A solution to this is to do what the Pope proposes: a Church that goes forth, open, to go to those who live far away, the wounded on the road of life. A Church that goes, and does not wait".
