Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Mexican government is discussing the Law on Arms thanks to the initiative of the President of the Republic. In this context, the Archdiocese of Mexico through its weekly "Desde la Fe", calls on people to reflect. In the editorial entitled "Armed to the teeth", sent to Agenzia Fides, it is emphasized that "the arms trade is one of the most lucrative business, and the United States maintain the hegemony of the production of weapons spread across the planet.
The analysis of the Center for Social Studies and Public Opinion of the Chamber of Deputies, published in December 2012, says that 30 percent of the weapons in the world is American-made ... the trafficking of small arms, is a problem that severely affects Mexico".
The text continues: "Studies estimate that every day two thousand weapons are smuggled in Mexico from the United States. There is nothing new in saying that this traffic stokes the drug-related violence, creating an endless criminal spiral. The cited study argues that in the current administration, in the period 2012-2014, more than 40,000 homicides were caused by executions, fights, assaults and drug dealing that resorted to heavy and light weapons. International agencies indicate that more than 15 million weapons are in circulation in the Mexican territory and are easily available".
While political campaigns continue, concludes the editorial, "this violence and arms trafficking will never be considered by the candidates as something to be fought and to permanently eliminate. It is necessary to strengthen the security of all human beings". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 20/04/2015)
