Wednesday, 15 April 2015

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - The Pastoral Commission for Land (CPT) presented the thirtieth edition of its annual report on the Rural Conflict in Brazil, relative to 2014, with information regarding murders, threats and violence due to the issues of land, water and work. The press conference was held on April 13 at the headquarters of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB).
Of the 1,307 cases of conflict with murder, only 108 went to trial, with the conviction of 86 people and 28 instigators.
For the Bishop of Balsas and President of the CPT, His Exc. Mgr. Enemésio Angelo Lazzaris, after 30 years of publication of the report, violence has not decreased. When comparing the years 2013 and 2014, refers the note sent to Fides, we see that instead there was an increase of 6% of murders. Mgr. Enemésio denounces the "ineffectiveness" of Brazilian courts in relation to the number of prosecutions and convictions of perpetrators and instigators.
The data collected by the Documentation Centre Dom Tomás Balduíno, which depends on the secretariat of the CPT, reports that the number of homicides increased from 34 to 36 cases. The state of Pará is the area that registers more deaths with 9 cases.
The number of attempted murder in Brazil has increased, according to the report. There were 56 cases in 2014 compared to 15 in 2013, an increase of 273%. On the contrary, death threats decreased by 24%. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 15/04/2015)
