Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - In Mexico more than a thousand children every year are born on the street, at home or in situations considered at high risk. The widespread phenomenon endangers the lives of pregnant women and of the unborn. According to figures released by the National System of Healthcare Information (Sinais), 966 deliveries were registered on streets or close to hospitals in 2011; 961 in 2012 and 987 in 2013. The births registered in the house or in areas near hospitals, public roads, from 2011 to 2013, represent 1.3% of the two million births of the entire Country.
In the category labeled "other places", 8000 children are born each year, and 250 in "non-specified places". To address the problem, the Commission of Indigenous Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies, has urged the health Secretariat and public institutions in the sector to develop and implement a program that contributes in reducing improvised deliveries and minimize the risk of death of mothers and newborn, give priority and immediate assistance to pregnant women to prevent fortuitous births.
