AMERICA/BRAZIL - Twelve million people live in favelas: educational projects for children

Thursday, 9 April 2015

San Paolo (Agenzia Fides) - In Brazil, young people have two choices to survive: to work or become criminals. Opportunities are very precarious especially for those who live in the favelas. The aim of a new campaign called Vive Brasil, promoted by the Salesian missionaries, is to help children in difficulty. "Families do not care for them, schools penalize them, society discriminates against them and does not offer them adequate opportunities. They are fodder for criminal gangs and criminals", says a Salesian missionary. To be born and to be brought up in a favela automatically implies a destiny of delinquency. To address this situation, the missionaries launch new projects with recreational activities. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 09/04/2015)
