Wednesday, 1 April 2015

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - In Colombia, until the month of February, about 25 000 cases of chikungunya virus were registered regarding children under 9 years of age and almost 29 000 among 10 to 19 year olds. According to data from the National Institute of Health, although pediatric cases in the Country are few compared to those seen in adults, children represent a vulnerable part of the population, more vulnerable and at risk, therefore, require special care and assistance. The virus may be more symptomatic in young children, according to the case and age, although adults have a more developed immune system. Joint pains are not easy to recognize as in adults and the symptoms disappear more quickly than adults. As with all pediatric diseases, in particular for this reason, a baby becomes dehydrated more easily, and doctors advise not to suspend breastfeeding. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 01/04/2015)
