AMERICA/BOLIVIA - Morales's party wins, but loses much political ground

Wednesday, 1 April 2015

La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - According to information sent to Fides, after the municipal and regional elections on March 29, the " Movimiento al Socialismo" (MAS) of President Evo Morales managed to remain as the first political force in the Country, but lost several of its traditional bastions, especially El Alto, where it had won since 2002.
In the elections the polarizations of the vote in three departments and four capitals were confirmed, where only two political forces obtained over 80% of the valid votes. At a departmental level, in Chuquisaca, according to the official count of 1,588 seats, MAS with former governor Esteban Urquizo obtained 44.74% of the votes, while the citizen group "Chuquisaca Somos Todos" (CST), with the nomination of the former peasant leader Damian Condori, is in first place with 46.95% of the votes. Both rivals have to face each other in the second round, on May 3.
Even the department of La Paz saw the vote polarized in two options; the candidate Félix Patzi with "Sovereignty and Freedom" managed to get 57% of the vote counting 1,863 seats, while its main political opponent (of the party of government), Felipa Huanca, obtained 24.85% of the votes. Therefore MAS won in four of the nine departments (Oruro, Potosí, Cochabamba and Pando), while the opposition won the governorships of Santa Cruz, Tarija and La Paz. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 01/04/2015)
